School Structure:

DFES encourages integrated learning. Most students remain with the same teacher throughout the day, with the exception of transitions to the customary special area classes.

About our School:
Deerfield Elementary School Mascot

Deerfield Elementary School is at the center of the thriving community of Edgewood, Maryland. The school offers many educational opportunities, as well as before- and after-school care for students. The school staff works in partnership with the community and local businesses, including Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union and BJ’s to support students in their growth toward being productive citizens. The PTA supports the educational programs with several fundraisers. The common goal of the school community is to encourage students to become life-long learners. The faculty and staff of Deerfield Elementary School are committed to providing students with a safe environment and a quality learning experience. Toward that goal, we offer many opportunities to expand the students’ horizons. Volunteers assist the teachers in providing one-on-one experiences, which focus on each child’s individual strengths.

Technology improvement is a focus at Deerfield Elementary. Although the computer lab was recently dismantled and dispersed into classrooms to make room for a additional fifth grade class, an effort is underway to focus on the benefits of the one- or two-computer classroom. A mini-lab consisting of six Internet-accessible computers has been newly created, offering opportunities for education enhancement.

Leadership opportunities for students include the Deerfield Student Council. Representatives have the opportunity to affect the school environment, offering fundraisers and using the monies to improve the school environment. Students hold office and, with the support of advisors, are encouraged to independently run the student council.

At Deerfield Elementary, we celebrate as students grow and develop on their way to becoming active, motivated members of the community. The future continues to look exciting as our students reach and surpass our expectations.

Community Involvment:

DFES enjoys a very active volunteer program with support from parents, secondary school students, businesses, churches, and various organizations at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The school has an active PTA. Monthly meetings focus on instructionally-related topics, as well as cultural activities for students.

The DFES building is frequently used by a variety of community agencies and organizations. Our staff members volunteer at a local, church-sponsored soup kitchen. A highly successful after-school program includes individual mentors for identified students. Activities in this program are social as well as academic.
