News Alert for 1/2/2024

HCPS Inclement Weather Operations as of January 2, 2024

The following message will be sent to all contacts via email, text, HCPS app, and posted on social media at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2024:

As of today, Tuesday, January 2, 2024, if there is a need to close schools and offices for inclement weather, it will be a "traditional" inclement weather day- schools and offices will be closed to students and staff.

Several weeks ago, HCPS staff asked our community to complete a survey on preferences for inclement weather days in the 2023-2024 school year. The results of the survey can be viewed here. Most of our community was in support of applying to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to conduct asynchronous instruction on up to 3 inclement weather days. Asynchronous instruction is when students participate at their own speed and on their own schedule, not requiring “live” attendance or instruction on the day of the inclement weather closure. Conducting asynchronous instruction on an inclement weather day means the day will count towards the 180 student instructional days that are required in our school calendar.

The Board received a presentation on the plan that will be used to implement asynchronous instruction in an inclement weather scenario at the last Board meeting in December. The Board is currently accepting feedback from the community on the plan. The Board intends to make a final decision on the application to MSDE at a January Board of Education business meeting. You can find the Board schedule and agendas here.

If the application is submitted to MSDE and approved, a notification will be sent to our community to ensure you’re aware of the virtual instruction plan on inclement weather days and how it will be implemented if needed in the future.
