Havre de Grace Middle students raise money for cancer research during Play 60
Article by Sarah Scholl, Library Media Specialist, HDMS

On October 24, students at Havre de Grace Middle School came decked out in pink for breast cancer awareness and were ready to play as part of the school’s Play 60 event.  Students participated in flag football, soccer, wellness walking, Drums Alive, Zumba and other planned activities for 60 minutes.  Students also had the opportunity to donate money to support the Kaufman Cancer Center in Bel Air, and more than $270 was raised in three days.  Students in the grade level that donated the most money got to see five of their fellow pinked-out peers cut a teacher’s hair to be donated to Locks of Love.  The sixth graders raised the most money, and the students who wore the most pink for the Play 60 event were the ones selected to man the scissors and cut Ms. Scholl’s hair the next school day.  A special thank you to Nikki Keen from Jordan Thomas Salon for supervising the big cut!  To learn more about Fuel Up to Play 60, a nationwide movement focused on fighting childhood obesity, visit www.fueluptoplay60.com.  Locks of Love is a public, non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantages children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.  More information can be found at www.locksoflove.org.  Great event by Havre de Grace Middle!
