Communication Update re: Social Media Threats Targeting School Systems

UPDATE 2:13 P.M. Tuesday, December 12, 2023:

The following message will be sent via email to all contacts in our Mass Notifications system and shared through push notification via the HCPS app:


There have been several media reports and messages sent by surrounding school districts to their communities addressing general threats to their school communities. Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) is now in receipt of a general threat to schools. This threat was received via email. While HCPS is not specifically named in the email, the threat was sent to a general HCPS email account.

Donoven Brooks, HCPS Supervisor of Safety and Security, is working closely with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office to review the content and source of the email. The email will be reported to all necessary law enforcement partners. There is no credible threat at this time.

HCPS has established safety and security measures in all our school and office buildings. Safety is our number one priority in HCPS. Over the last few years, safety and security liaison positions have been added to ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our schools. It is imperative to the safety and security of our students and staff that we continue to be vigilant and always remain so. We will continue to investigate any potential threats with local law enforcement partners in our county.

Harford County Public Schools is aware of general threats being made to school systems across the country via social media outlets. In response, we want to share the following reassurances and reminders with our community:

Harford County Public Schools has established safety and security measures in all our school and office buildings. Safety is our number one priority in Harford County Public Schools. Over the last few years, safety and security liaison positions have been added to ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our schools.  We are aware of neighboring counties receiving vague threats. While we have not received any to our county specifically, we continue to encourage students and staff that if they see something, they say something. It is imperative to the safety and security of our students and staff that we continue to be vigilant and always remain so. We will investigate any potential threats with local law enforcement partners in our county.
