Middle School Math

Connecting to the Real World

Middle school is a pivotal time for students to see how math connects to their lives and futures, apply the strategies they learned in elementary school, and understand why mathematics works the way it does.

The HCPS Middle School Mathematics Curriculum develops critical thinking skills, builds on strategies learned in elementary school, and develops opportunities to model real world situations. Through collaborative tasks, use of multiple strategies, and student choice, students develop a deep understanding of mathematics, confidence in their abilities, and love for learning.

In mathematics ,students are always learning about and using these mathematics habits of mind:

  • I work through problems by thinking carefully and not giving up.
  • I explain my thinking clearly, listen to understand others' ideas, and offer feedback
  • I choose and use tools- like diagrams, formulas, manipulatives, or calculators- strategically.
  • I look for patterns, rules, and structure to make sense of math.
  • I use math reasoning and what I know about numbers to solve problems accurately.
  • I connect new problems to thins I've learned before to figure them out.
  • I double-check my work and make sure my answers are reasonable.
  • I look for repeated steps in calculations to find methods and improve efficiency.
