North Harford Senior Earns Prestigious Harford Bird Club Horizon Award

North Harford High School senior Emma Konopacki has been named the recipient of the Harford Bird Club's Horizon Award, one of the Maryland Ornithological Society's most distinguished recognitions for emerging naturalists.

Emma's path to the award began in April 2025 with a single visit to the Harford Glen Bird Banding Station, a program operated through the Harford Glen Environmental Education Center. That first visit sparked what would become a rapid and remarkable immersion into the world of bird banding.

In the months that followed, Emma mastered a range of advanced techniques, including safely removing birds from mist nets, placing identification bands with precision, and collecting detailed biological data such as species, age, sex, and reproductive status. She also studied the Pyle's Guide, a comprehensive and highly technical reference used as the cornerstone of standardized bird banding practices.

Emma attended every banding session held during the 2025 season and has continued her involvement as the 2026 season gets underway.

At the Harford Bird Club's meeting earlier this month, where she received the award in person, Emma was praised for her dedication, her willingness to take on difficult tasks, and the positive spirit she brings to the banding station. She was joined at the meeting by members of the Harford Glen Bird Banding Team who came to support her.

Emma is a student in the Natural Resources/Animal Science Magnet Program at North Harford High School.

Congratulations, Emma!
